Kjell Qvale and British Motor Car Distributors
In 1946, Kjell Qvale bought his first automotive dealership in American with an $8,500 investment.
Over the next sixty years, he would make Qvale one of the most distinguished names in the American automotive industry.
Qvale started in the automobile industry selling Willys Jeeps before becoming one of the pioneers of importing foreign cars to America.
He was the first to import MG sports cars to the US in 1947, later adding Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Lotus, Bentley, Porsche, De Tomaso and Masarati to his portfolio.
In 1949, Qvale makes the move to San Francisco and changes his dealerships name from Qvale Motors to British Motor Car Distributors, Ltd.
They occupied a few different locations around the city before moving in to the very famous and beautiful Maybeck Building at 901 Van Ness.
In 1952, Qvale tried his own hand at fabricating automobiles with the BMC Prototype, a fiberglass body that oculd fit on a variety of chassis.
The only BMC Prototype was sold to a SCCA racer by the name of Pete Snell, who raced it in local events
In 1950, Qvale is named chairman of the first annual Pebble Beach Road Race and subsequently the founder of the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance.
Today, the Concours is said to be the premier celebration of the automobile.
Jensen Motors of West Bromwich, England, one of England's most specialized and revered marquees, is bought by Qvale in 1970. He then oversees the introduction of the Jensen Interceptor III, a much improved car.
But he has a hidden agenda for the factory, which is revealed two years later...
The all-new Jensen-Healey sports car, developed by Kjell Qvale and Donald Healey, launches in 1972. The car is a success in Britain and America, where it is distributed by Jensen Motors Inc, a subsidiary of BMCD.
Qvale also establishes a network of 45 Jensen dealers throughout the US and Canada. 11,000 are sold worldwide before the factory closes in 1976.
By the mid-1970s, Italian sports cars represented the pinnacle of the genre.
Capitalizing on the change in market direction, Qvale established Maserati Import Co (1976) and Maserati Automobiles Inc. (1980) to import and distribute the sleek and sexy sports cars in America.
